What we do

During the course you will (further) develop your teaching skills and become aware of your role and responsibilities as a teaching assistant. There are different kinds of exercises to practice your teaching skills in different situations. Course specific information will not be part of the program of this course, you will receive this from your course coordinator. The course consists of two training sessions of 4 hours each that both will take place in the afternoon from 1-5pm.

Training Individual supervision

This course is strongly recommended for every PhD prior to the first time they will supervise a BSc of MSc student during an internship or thesis writing. During the course you will (further) develop coaching skills, you will learn how to give feedback on the behavior and output of the student, and how to guide a student successfully through his/her internship. Practicing these skills is a major part of the course, to let you discover what supervision style suits you most.

Workshop Calibration

When is a paper rewarded a 6? Or an 8? The calibration workshop is designed to help you, as a research group, to set up guidelines to grade papers from students. Together you will decide what the requirements are for a certain grade. There are several ways to do this, and our role is to guide this process. The preparation for this is that everyone grades a thesis / paper beforehand, and thinks about the reasons behind giving a certain amount of points.

We will organize these meetings on request. For more questions or to request a workshop: please send an email to: PhDtraining-science@uva.nl.

Workshop Intervision

How can you deal with difficult situations around teaching, collaborations, etc.? During the intervision-session we will discuss recent and pressing problematic situations, so issues regarding teaching, supervising, collaborations, etc. that are unresolved. Intervision is a structured way to look at these issues, and possible to help you solve them.

We will organize these meetings on request. This means we will visit your research group to supervise a session and lead the meeting. A session like this will follow a set structure, which depends on the type of cases. For more questions or to request a meeting: please send an email to: PhDtraining-science@uva.nl.
