If different levels of prior knowledge is an issue when students start a particular course, it could be worthwhile to offer online remedial modules where students take an automatically graded diagnostic test. If they lack required knowledge, they are presented with instructional material (video or text) and practice quizzes on their deficient topics.
Why use remedial teaching
Remedial modules can be used to engage students on their own competence level and reach the prerequisite knowledge that they need when they start a particular course. In this way, you don’t have to spend contact hours on addressing these deficiencies that can also greatly differ depending on the student. Remedial modules can be offered ‘just-in-time’ before a course. In this way, the heterogeneity in prior knowledge of students is minimised, ensuring you can teach in a way that all students can keep up and stay motivated.
How can we help
We can help you decide whether remedial teaching could be helpful for your course and/or programme. We can also help you choose the right tool(s) for your design.
