With interactive and adaptive course material we mean the use of online course material to create interactive, personalised learning trajectories. Students can go through the course material themselves, on their own pace.
Why use interactive and/or adaptive course material
Not every student studies at the same pace. Some students move more quickly through the course material than others. In addition, some students would like to go deeper into the material than others, and there can be different levels of knowledge which need to be overcome. Students also have different styles of learning, and diverging needs when it comes to the material that is offered.
How to use interactive and/or adaptive course material
Your course material can be offered online in an interactive manner, so students can go through the course material independently based on their own pace of study and understanding. For instance, you can set it up in such a way that a next step in the material will only become available when the student has successfully completed a previous step. However, interactive material can also be designed in a way that the student automatically receives extra hints or is offered extra material and assignments to have some more practice based on a certain number of incorrect answers. In this way, the course material better suits the needs of students, while demanding little extra effort per student by the instructor, making it a scalable teaching method.
