Screen Capture Software

Camtasia

Instructional videos can be helpful to explain difficult topics, offer context or demonstrate applications or examples. In many cases you yourself don’t need to appear in the video – recording a PowerPoint presentation or showing the use of software on your screen will often suffice. You can even add some practice questions in the video and place it on Canvas. Camtasia consists of two parts: Recorder for recording the video and Studio editor for editing.

You can use Camtasia for

  • Recording your screen (e.g. Powerpoint presentation) and voice;
  • Editing your recordings;
  • Adding practice questions to videos;
  • Creating a SCORM package (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) for Canvas.

Explain Everything

Explain everything is a ‘collaborative and interactive whiteboard’ application that can be downloaded for Windows, iOS, Android and Chrome OS. Using a tablet or computer, you can write texts and draw on a digital whiteboard (a slide), and import photos, videos and other files. Animated videos can be created by writing, drawing, and using objects on the whiteboard while recording. Explain Everything works very well together with an iPad Pro to create short explanatory videos or to give lectures on mathematics and statistics, for example. The lecture can easily be recorded and provided to students afterwards.

You can use Explain Everything for:

  • Creating digital whiteboards/slides (consisting of text, drawings, pictures, video’s, files, mathematical equations);
  • Interacting with these objects;
  • Creating clips/animations that include your voice;
  • Sharing the digital whiteboards/slides;
  • Using as a (better legible) whiteboard in lectures.
